SCF KHIBINY rescues Indonesian seafarers in Malacca Straits
Press Release of Sovcomflot

Quote

On Friday 1st August 2008, at 11h45 local time, 13 seafarers all of Indonesian antionality were rescued by Sovcomflot's Suezmax tanker SCF Khibiny 9159,000 tones deadweight) in the Malacca Straits off Indonesia. The seafarers were shipwrecked after their vessel, the Indonesian flag dry cargo ship MV Damain Lestari, sank following a hit-and-run collision at around 03h00 - 04h00 local time on 1 August with an unidentified vessel. A further eight survivors were picked up by another vessel passing through the Straits.

Captain Sergey Bukvich and the crew of the SCF Khibiny were quick to act following the sighting of two life rafts drifting in the Malacca Straits, and a smoke distress signal. After positioning their ship alongside the rafts and embarking all the survivors, including the vessel's Master and Chief Engineer, medical assistance, accommodation and meals were provided. The shipwrecked seafarers were then handed over to an Indonesian navy vessel on 2nd August 2008, prior to the arrival of the SCF Khibiny at Singapore later that day.

Throughout the rescue, Captain Bukvich remained in close contact with Unicom of Cyprus, managers of the Russian-owned SCF Khibiny. Particular care was exercised during the rescue operation, given the risk of piracy in this busy shipping route.

This latest incided involving a Sovcomflot-owned ship follows the rescue by SCF Tomsk of 42 people from a boat found drifting in the North Atlantic, in June 2007.
